2020 Census

MARCH 18, 2020
Due to COVID-19, census field operations will be suspended for two weeks until April 1, 2020. The Census Bureau is taking this step to help protect the health and safety of the American public. We will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate steps in consultation with the U.S. Census Bureau and public health authorities. Information  about any change in operations will also be shared with local authorities, community partners and the media.

It has never been easier to respond on your own, whether online, over the phone or by mail - all without having to meet a census taker. We are encouraging everyone to respond online using a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone, or tablet.

You can also respond by phone or mail. Everyone should respond to the 2020 Census as soon as they receive their invitation in the mail and remind their friends, families and social networks about the importance of responding.  The invitation you will receive includes the web address for the online questionnaire in English as well as where to respond online in 12 additional languages – ensuring over 99% of U.S. households can respond online in their preferred language.

The invitation will also include phone numbers for English and the 12 additional languages – ensuring over 99% of U.S. households can respond over the phone in their preferred language. Telephone assistance is available seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. EDT for those who prefer to respond by phone.

Some households will receive a paper questionnaire in the first mailing and all households that have not responded online or by phone will receive a paper questionnaire between April 8 and April 16. The paper questionnaire includes a prepaid postage envelope to return it by mail.

In late May, census takers will begin visiting households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census.

Once again, we encourage everyone to respond online today at 2020Census.gov.  With the flexibility and support of the American people, we will achieve a complete and accurate count, which helps guide funding decisions for things like hospitals, roads and emergency services.
