GOALS
  • Improve the Water Quality of the effluent being discharged from the Region II Wastewater Treatment Plant; and
  • Eliminate sanitary sewer overflows and surcharging conditions of the gravity sewer system; and
  • Reduce extraneous flows, typically referred to as Inflow and Infiltration (I&I) entering the gravity sewer system.

St. Michaels Gravity Sewer Collection System
  • Constructed in early 1950s (As-built - 1954)
  • 34,000+ lineal feet of 8, 10, 12 and 15 inch diameter pipes
    • Pipe materials include
      • Vitrified Clay Pipe – 5 foot pipe sections
      • PVC pipe – 20 foot pipe sections
      • Possibly some HDPE Pipe
  • Over 225 manholes (MHs)
    • Materials of Construction
      • Brick
      • Precast Concrete
    • Average depth - 7 vertical feet
    • Internal diameter (ID) typically – 4 feet

St. Michaels Gravity Sewer Collection System
  • Inflow and Infiltration (I & I) Corrective Action
    • August 2001 - County Council approved in-pipe flow monitoring contract with Maryland Environmental Service (MES)
    • November/December 2001 - Department of Public Works (DPW) delayed flow monitoring investigation due to drought conditions
    • December 2002 - MES initiated in-pipe flow monitoring
    • March 2003 - MES conducted preliminary sewer collection system inspections
    • April 2003 - County Council approved expanded scope of work for sewer collection system investigation that includes smoke testing
    • February 2004 submitted grant applications to repair collection system
    • July 2005 – MDE awards Talbot County $500,000 in grant funds for the pump station improvements
    • August 2005 – Talbot County initiates sewer replacement designs for Mill and Carpenter Streets
    • November 2005 - Bids received for the Pump Station Improvements and Force Main Construction projects and initiated Manhole Inspections
    • March 2006 – MDE approves an additional $500,000 in grant funds for the force main construction
    • April 2006 – Notice to proceed issued to contractors for Pump Station Upgrades and new Force Main and County seeks approval for $593,590 for sewer line improvements from MDE and County Council
