The Talbot County Council enacted an Administrative Resolution imposing a complete ban on all open-air burning throughout the county on June 21, 2024. Following recent rain, the Burn Ban Committee has recommended to Council to let the ban expire as expected on July 21, 2024.

Following July 21, 2024, residents may resume normal open-air burning activities, such as fire pits and burn barrels. However, Talbot County Emergency Services would like to remind residents to always practice fire safety.

Fire Safety & Guidelines:

  1. Receive a Permit: Prior to any burning by open fire, an application for a permit should be submitted to the Office of Environmental Health. More information at talbothealth.org/environmental-health/burn-permits/
  2. Notify Officials: Notify proposed open fires to Talbot County Emergency Services at 410-822-0095.
  3. Supervise All Burns: Never leave any fire unattended. Always have someone watching it.
  4. Keep Water Nearby: Have a water source or a fire extinguisher readily available to extinguish any unintended flames.
  5. Clear the Area: Ensure the area around the fire is free of flammable materials, including leaves, paper, and dry grass.
  6. Monitor Weather Conditions: Avoid burning on windy days or during dry conditions.
  7. Extinguish Completely: Make sure the fire is completely out and the ashes are cool before leaving the area.

The Talbot County Council and Emergency Services thank residents for their cooperation during the burn ban and encourage continued vigilance in fire safety practices.
